A South African forming a band in Perth
Listen to the interview here
Full disclosure: I used to play in a band with Justin in our late teens, so it was quite a pleasure for me to catch up with him and hear his vision for Built in Fire. Brought back some good memories to say the least.

Juggling Duties
All of the members have careers and families, so the landscape is a little different from what it was like for us in the early 2000’s but the determination to make good music hasn’t changed.
Gear & Recording
Justin and I chatted about gear – namely Gary’s insane guitar collection among other things, falling in love with a Fender Telecaster and the methods behind recording a demo on a budget. The latter being the more interesting part of the discussion if I may say so myself. I dwelled on this topic for quite a while to really get the gist of how these guys are pulling this off. As a quick summary it involves some pretty good instrument and vocal mics, a Scarlett Focusrite 2i2, a Macbook Pro and recording software called Logic Pro.
Justin met a band in Perth called Synchronicity who’s members also own a production company. These guys were gracious enough to agree to Built in Fire recording their tracks at home and then handing it over to the production company to mix it together. Thereafter it will be sent off to Sydney for mastering.
We’ll be keeping in touch with them to see how this journey unfolds!
